One hot afternoon a deer was so thirsty that her throat felt as dry as wood. She ran and ran until she reached a clear lake in the middle of the forest, and drank her fill, slurp, slurp. Ah, how lovely!
When she had finished, the deer noticed her reflection in the still water. On her head spread a magnificent set of antlers, branching like a tree! She lifted her head proudly. “Wow! How beautiful my antlers are! No one in the forest has such a crown.”
Then she looked down at her legs: four thin, skinny legs. Her face fell. “Ugh! Such a fine body, and legs like sticks! Everyone will laugh at them.” She almost wished she could hide them.
Just then something rustled in the bushes. Then came a deep roar: “ROAR!” The startled deer saw a huge lion staring at her! Without a moment’s thought, she ran.
And how amazing! The thin legs she had been ashamed of carried her away like the wind. Clip-clop, clip-clop! Across the open meadow, the lion fell far behind.
But beyond the meadow lay thick forest. As soon as the deer dashed in, her big antlers got caught in the creepers and branches. The more she pulled, the more tangled they became! Behind her, the lion’s heavy footsteps, thud-thud, came closer and closer.
The deer shook her head with all her strength, planted her strong legs in the ground and gave one mighty tug. Snap! Crack! The creepers tore and the branch broke! Free at last, she sprang out and ran again, and the lion’s paw grabbed only air. At last she hid safely in a bamboo grove across the river.
Still panting, the deer thought, “What a lesson today! The antlers I was so proud of nearly got me caught, and the legs I was ashamed of saved my life.” From that day on she never felt sad about her legs again. Instead, every day she gave thanks to Allah for everything He had given her.
