One afternoon a fox was walking along a forest path. He hadn’t eaten since morning. He had searched here and searched there, but found nothing at all. His tummy was rumbling, grumble-grumble, and he was feeling grumpy too.
Suddenly he stopped. A grapevine had climbed up the branches of an old tree, and from it hung bunches of purple grapes, ripe, bursting with juice and shining in the sun! The fox’s mouth watered. “Aha! Lunch is right here!”
But the grapes hung very high. The fox took a run and leapt, hup! He couldn’t reach. He leapt again, hup! Still no luck. Down he tumbled onto the grass, thump.
The fox didn’t give up. He pushed a stone over and jumped from the top of it. He tried scrambling up the trunk. He wagged his tail, shook himself and jumped even higher. But the grapes stayed just out of reach, swaying in the breeze as if they were teasing him.
At last the fox was worn out. He was dusty, his paws hurt, and he was still hungry. He stuck his nose in the air, looked at the grapes and said, “Hmph! Who wants those grapes anyway? Anyone can see they’re sour! They’d set my teeth on edge.”
A little tailorbird on a branch had been watching the whole thing. She giggled. “Oh, Brother Fox, you haven’t tasted a single grape! How do you know whether they’re sour or sweet?” The fox didn’t answer. Tail tucked in and face sulky, he stomped away.
The tailorbird pecked at a ripe grape, closed her eyes and said, “Mmm, so sweet! Just like honey!” The grapes weren’t sour at all. The fox had put all the blame on them only because he couldn’t get them.
We sometimes do the same. When we can’t have something, we call it ‘bad’ or ‘useless’. But it isn’t right to find fault with others to hide our own failure. Admitting the truth and trying again is the brave thing to do.
The lesson
Don’t find fault with what you can’t have just to hide your own failure.
