On the edge of a village lived a grey donkey. One day, given a rest from his work, he wandered into the forest. The chirping birds and rustling leaves made him feel quite cheerful.
Suddenly, beside a bush, he saw a huge lion skin with a golden mane lying on the ground. Perhaps some hunter had left it there. A naughty idea popped into the donkey’s head. “If I put this on, everyone will think I’m a lion! Then they’ll all be scared of me and bow when I pass!”
No sooner thought than done. He tugged and pulled the skin over himself and strutted off, chest puffed out, thud, thud, thud. Seeing him from afar, the rabbit dived into its burrow. The deer ran off. The monkeys squeaked and shot up to the treetops. Even the wild boar raised its tail and bolted.
The donkey was overjoyed! “Ha ha! Look how afraid of me they are! I’m the king of the forest now!” He walked about even more grandly, head held high.
Then, at a bend in the path, he met a fox. “Let me give this one a fright too,” thought the donkey. Full of pride, he opened his mouth to roar as loudly as he could. But what came out was: “Hee-haw! Hee-haw!”
The fox froze for a moment, then rolled on the ground laughing. “Ha ha ha! My friend, you’ve made yourself look just like a lion. But your voice gave you away! If I hadn’t heard that bray, I’d have run off in fright myself!”
Hearing the laughter, all the animals and birds came out one by one. The rabbit, the deer, the monkeys: now they all giggled at the donkey. His ears drooped with embarrassment. Slowly he took off the lion skin and laid it on the ground.
Hanging his head, the donkey said, “Please forgive me. I frightened you all for nothing. I’m a donkey, and a donkey is what I should be.” The animals forgave him, and that day they all munched soft grass together by the river. Wearing someone else’s clothes doesn’t make you someone else; your real self is what earns true respect.
