One morning little Rafi was having breakfast in the village courtyard when a piece of cheese slipped from his hand onto the ground. In the blink of an eye a black crow swooped down, “Caw!”, snatched it in her beak and flew off to a high branch of the silk-cotton tree beside the pond.
Just then a fox was passing under the tree. As soon as he smelled the cheese, he stopped and looked up. There it was, a yellow chunk in the crow’s beak! His mouth watered. “If only that were mine! But I can’t climb trees. What can I do?”
The fox scratched his head for a while. Then his eyes twinkled. Putting on his sweetest smile, he looked up and said, “Good morning, Sister Crow! How lovely you look today! Your feathers are like black silk, shining in the sun.”
The crow shuffled on her branch. She had never heard such praise before. The fox made his voice even sweeter. “And your eyes are so bright! I really think you should be queen of all the birds. I only wonder one thing: is your voice as beautiful as your looks? Won’t you sing me just one song?”
The crow swelled with pride. “The fox wants to hear me sing! I’ll show him right now how wonderful my voice is!” Without another thought, she opened her beak and cawed with all her might: “Caw! Caw! Caw!”
The moment her beak opened, the cheese dropped, plop, right in front of the fox’s nose! He gobbled it up, wagged his tail and said, “Thank you, Sister Crow! I don’t know about your voice, but your sense is a little short. Think before you fall for sweet words!” And off he ran, disappearing into the bushes.
The crow sat on her branch with her beak hanging open: empty beak, empty tummy and a heart full of shame. Now she understood. The fox hadn’t been praising her at all; he had been fooling her.
Down in the courtyard, Rafi laughed at the whole scene. Nanu stroked his head and said, “You see, my dear? When someone flatters you too much, stop and think about what they want. If you fall for flattery, you lose what is yours.”
