এক নদীর ধারের বনে থাকত এক সিংহ আর এক ভালুক। দুজনেই নিজেকে বনের সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী ভাবত, তাই কেউ কাউকে এক চুলও ছাড় দিত না।
In a forest by a river lived a lion and a bear. Each thought he was the strongest animal in the forest, so neither would give way to the other even a tiny bit.
এক বিকেলে জেলেদের নৌকা থেকে একটা ঝুড়ি গড়িয়ে পড়ল নদীর পাড়ে। ঝুড়িভর্তি টাটকা রুপালি মাছ, রোদে ঝিকমিক করছে! ঠিক একই সময়ে দুদিক থেকে ঝুড়িটার কাছে পৌঁছাল সিংহ আর ভালুক।
One afternoon a basket rolled off a fishermen’s boat onto the riverbank. It was full of fresh silver fish, glittering in the sun! At exactly the same moment, the lion and the bear arrived at the basket from opposite sides.
ভালুক থাবা দিয়ে ঝুড়ি আঁকড়ে ধরে বলল, “এটা আমার! আমি আগে দেখেছি।” সিংহ গরগর করে উঠল, “মোটেই না! আমি আগে দেখেছি, তাই এটা আমার।” “না, আমার!” “না, আমার!”—দুজনের গলা চড়তে লাগল।
The bear grabbed the basket with his paw. “It’s mine! I saw it first.” The lion growled, “Not at all! I saw it first, so it’s mine.” “No, mine!” “No, MINE!” Their voices grew louder and louder.
কথায় কথায় শুরু হলো ধস্তাধস্তি। ভালুক টানে এদিকে, সিংহ টানে ওদিকে। ধপাস করে দুজনেই গড়িয়ে পড়ল কাদায়। উঠে আবার ঠেলাঠেলি, গুঁতোগুঁতি, ঘোরাঘুরি! ধুলো উড়ল, ঝোপ দুলল, পাখিরা ফুড়ুৎ করে উড়ে গেল। এভাবে চলল অনেকক্ষণ।
Soon words turned into a tussle. The bear pulled one way, the lion pulled the other. Splat! They both tumbled into the mud. Up they got, and again they pushed and shoved and spun round and round! Dust flew, bushes shook and the birds flew off in a flutter. It went on for a long time.
শেষে দুজনেই এমন হাঁপিয়ে পড়ল যে আর নড়ার শক্তিটুকুও রইল না। জিভ বের করে, চিৎপটাং হয়ে শুয়ে পড়ল ঘাসের ওপর—একজন এদিকে, একজন ওদিকে। মাছের ঝুড়িটা পড়ে রইল ঠিক মাঝখানে।
In the end they were both so tired they couldn’t move a whisker. Tongues hanging out, they flopped flat on their backs in the grass, one on this side and one on that. The basket of fish sat right in the middle.
এতক্ষণ একটা ঝোপের আড়াল থেকে সব দেখছিল এক শিয়াল। সে চুপিচুপি বেরিয়ে এল, পা টিপে টিপে গেল ঝুড়ির কাছে। তারপর ঝুড়িটা মুখে তুলে নিয়ে হাসিমুখে বলল, “ধন্যবাদ, বন্ধুরা! তোমরা ঝগড়া করো, আমি বরং খেয়ে আসি!” বলেই সে দিল চম্পট।
All this while a fox had been watching from behind a bush. Quietly he crept out and tiptoed up to the basket. He picked it up in his mouth and said with a grin, “Thank you, friends! You carry on quarrelling; I’ll go and eat!” And away he ran.
সিংহ আর ভালুক শুয়ে শুয়ে শুধু তাকিয়ে দেখল। ওঠার শক্তি নেই, তাড়া করার তো প্রশ্নই নেই! ভালুক দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে বলল, “আমরা কী বোকা! মারামারি না করে যদি ভাগ করে খেতাম, দুজনেরই পেট ভরত।” সিংহ মাথা নেড়ে বলল, “ঠিক বলেছ। ঝগড়া করে আমরা দুজনেই ঠকলাম, আর লাভ হলো তৃতীয়জনের।”
The lion and the bear could only lie there and watch. They had no strength to get up, let alone give chase! The bear sighed. “How foolish we are! If we had shared instead of fighting, we would both have eaten well.” The lion nodded. “You’re right. By quarrelling we both lost, and a third one gained.”
সেদিনের পর থেকে সিংহ আর ভালুক আর কখনো খাবার নিয়ে ঝগড়া করেনি। কিছু পেলে দুজনে মিলে সমান ভাগ করে নিত। ভাগ করে খেলে খাবারও মজা লাগে, আর বন্ধুত্বও টিকে থাকে।
From that day on, the lion and the bear never fought over food again. Whatever they found, they shared equally. Food tastes better when it is shared, and friendships last longer too.
