In a big banyan tree lived a flock of ravens. All day they chatted, “caw-caw,” searched for food together and slept side by side at night. But one raven in the flock was not happy. He didn’t like his black feathers one bit.
One day he flew into a garden where lots of peacock feathers lay scattered on the ground: blue, green and gold, each with a round ‘eye’ in the middle, sparkling in the sun! The raven’s eyes lit up. “If I stick these on, I’ll look as beautiful as a peacock!”
No sooner thought than done. One by one he picked up the feathers in his beak and tucked them into his wings and tail. Then he looked at himself in the pond and hopped with delight. “Wow! I’m no ordinary raven any more!”
He flew back to the banyan tree, put his beak in the air and said, “You’re all black and ugly! I won’t live with you any longer. I’m going to join the peacocks.” The other ravens were deeply hurt, but they said nothing. Off he strutted.
In the peacocks’ garden he paraded about, pretending to spread a tail. But his walk and his “caw-caw” were nothing like a peacock’s. Soon the peacocks realised. “Hey! This isn’t a peacock. It’s a raven wearing our fallen feathers!” Laughing, they tugged their feathers back out with their beaks and said, “Off you go, friend, back where you belong.”
Black-feathered once more, the raven flew back to the banyan tree with his head hanging low. But this time the ravens turned away. One of them said, “You told us we were ugly. Why have you come back now?” The raven’s eyes filled with tears, and he sat all alone on the lowest branch.
After a long while he gathered his courage, went before them all and said, “I was wrong. Trying to look beautiful with someone else’s feathers, I insulted you. Please forgive me.” Then the oldest raven of the flock, Grandpa Raven, drew him close with his wing. “When someone sees his mistake and says sorry, we don’t turn him away. Come, you are one of us.”
From that day on, the raven never again felt sad about his black feathers. For the first time he noticed how they shimmered blue in the sunlight. Allah made each of us just as we are, and that is our beauty. True happiness comes not from borrowed finery but from being content as yourself.
