One stormy night, an eagle’s nest fell from a tall tree near the hills. In the morning, on his way to the fields, Rahim Chacha found a large egg lying in the grass, still unbroken. “Oh, poor little thing!” he said, and carefully carried it home, placing it in the hen house under a mother hen who was sitting on her eggs.
Some days later, along with the chicks, the big egg hatched too. The chick that came out was a little different: big feet, a hooked beak and sharp eyes. But the mother hen didn’t mind. She tucked them all lovingly under her wings and clucked, “Cluck-cluck, you are all my babies.”
Days went by and the eaglet grew bigger, but he didn’t know he was an eagle. Like his brothers and sisters, he scratched the ground for worms, called “cluck-cluck,” and flapped his wings to reach the top of the fence at most, then flopped back down. Everyone said, “Chickens can’t fly any higher than that.”
One bright morning, as he pecked at grain in the yard, he happened to look up. High in the sky, near the clouds, a huge bird was gliding with outstretched wings. Without a single flap it circled on the wind, as if the sky were its home! Something stirred inside the eaglet’s chest. “Who is that?”
The rooster beside him sniffed. “That’s an eagle, the king of birds. But don’t dream of flying like him. You’re a chicken!” The eaglet fell silent. He felt sad, but he thought the rooster was probably right.
But the next day the great eagle himself came down and perched on the palm tree beside the farm. The chickens dashed into their coop in fright, but somehow the eaglet wasn’t afraid. The great eagle looked at him and said gently, “Little brother, look at your reflection in the water. Your beak, your eyes, your wings are all like mine. You are not a chicken; you are an eagle! Allah made you to fly in the sky.”
On shaky legs, the eaglet climbed onto the haystack. He closed his eyes and said, “Bismillah!” Then he flapped, whoosh, whoosh! But after a few feet he fell, thump, into the soft hay. The rooster laughed. The eaglet didn’t give up. He climbed up and tried again. The third time he climbed onto a branch of the palm tree and spread his wings wide, and just then a gust of wind lifted him up, higher and higher!
Cutting through the rushing wind, the eaglet soared towards the clouds. Below, the yard grew tiny, and his hen mother and brothers and sisters stared up in wonder. He called out with joy, and this time it was the cry of a real eagle!
But the eagle never forgot who had raised him with love. He often flew back to perch on the farm’s palm tree, greeted his hen mother, and kept watch so that no fox could come near the chicks. Never let others’ words make you feel small; with effort, you can discover the gifts Allah has given you.
