এক সবুজ বনের মাঝখানে ছিল ঝরনার পানিতে ভরা ছোট্ট এক পুকুর। পানি এমন টলটলে যে তলার নুড়িপাথরও গোনা যেত। পুকুরের চারপাশে গর্ত খুঁড়ে থাকত একদল খরগোশ। তেষ্টা পেলেই তারা টুকটুক করে নেমে আসত, চুকচুক করে ঠান্ডা পানি খেত, তারপর নরম ঘাসে লাফালাফি করে খেলত।
In the middle of a green forest lay a little pond fed by a spring. Its water was so clear you could count the pebbles on the bottom. All around it, a family of rabbits lived in burrows. Whenever they were thirsty they hopped down, sipped the cool water, and then bounced about on the soft grass.
একবার গরমের দিনে কোথা থেকে এল বিশাল এক হাতির পাল। ধুপধাপ! ধুপধাপ! তাদের পায়ের চাপে মাটি কাঁপে, গাছের পাতা ঝরঝর করে পড়ে। হাতিরা রোজ পুকুরে নেমে ঝপাং ঝপাং করে গোসল করে, পানি ঘোলা করে ফেলে। খরগোশদের কত গর্ত যে পায়ের নিচে চ্যাপ্টা হয়ে গেল! একদিন তো ছোট্ট এক খরগোশছানা আরেকটুর জন্য হাতির পায়ের তলায় পড়ছিল।
One hot summer, a huge herd of elephants arrived from far away. Thud-thump! Thud-thump! The ground shook under their feet and leaves came pattering down. Every day the elephants splashed into the pond for a bath and churned the water into mud. Many rabbit burrows were squashed flat, and one day a tiny rabbit was very nearly stepped on.
ভয়ে-দুশ্চিন্তায় খরগোশেরা বড় বটগাছের নিচে সভা ডাকল। “এভাবে চললে আমরা বাঁচব কী করে?” সবাই কাঁদো কাঁদো। তখন উঠে দাঁড়াল সবচেয়ে বুড়ো খরগোশ, লম্বুকান দাদু। বনের সবাই জানত, তার মাথায় বুদ্ধির অভাব নেই। দাদু গোঁফ নেড়ে বললেন, “চিন্তা কোরো না। আমার মাথায় একটা ফন্দি এসেছে।”
Frightened and worried, the rabbits held a meeting under the big banyan tree. “How can we live like this?” they cried. Then the oldest rabbit stood up. His name was Grandpa Longears, and everyone knew his head was full of good ideas. He twitched his whiskers and said, “Don’t worry. I have a plan.”
“কিন্তু দাদু, আমরা এত্তটুকু, আর হাতিরা পাহাড়ের মতো! তুমি ওদের সাথে পারবে কী করে?” দাদু মুচকি হেসে বললেন, “গায়ের জোরে নয় রে, বুদ্ধির জোরে। আজ রাতেই দেখবে।”
“But Grandpa, we are so small, and the elephants are as big as hills! How can you beat them?” Grandpa smiled. “Not with muscles, my dears. With brains. Wait until tonight and you will see.”
সে রাতে আকাশে উঠল গোল থালার মতো পূর্ণিমার চাঁদ। জোছনায় চারদিক রুপালি। লম্বুকান দাদু টুকটুক করে উঠে গেলেন হাতিদের বিশ্রামের জায়গার পাশে উঁচু এক পাথরের মাথায়। তারপর গলা ফাটিয়ে ডাকলেন, “ওহে হাতির দল! শোনো, শোনো! আমি চাঁদমামার দূত!” হাতিরা কান খাড়া করে মুখ তুলে তাকাল।
That night a round full moon rose like a silver plate, and the whole forest glowed. Grandpa Longears climbed to the top of a tall rock beside the place where the elephants rested. Then he called out as loudly as he could, “O elephants! Listen, listen! I am a messenger from Uncle Moon!” The elephants pricked up their great ears and looked up.
দাদু বললেন, “ওই পুকুর চাঁদমামার প্রিয় জায়গা, খরগোশেরা তাঁর ছোট্ট প্রতিবেশী। তোমরা পানি ঘোলা করে তাঁর ঘর নষ্ট করছ, তাই তিনি খুব রেগে আছেন। বিশ্বাস না হলে আজ রাতেই পুকুরে গিয়ে নিজের চোখে দেখো। আর শোনো, পাহাড়ের ওপারে আছে মস্ত এক নদী। তোমাদের মতো বড়দের জন্য সেটাই ভালো জায়গা।”
“That pond is Uncle Moon’s favourite place,” said Grandpa, “and the rabbits are his little neighbours. You have been muddying his home, and he is very cross. If you don’t believe me, go and look tonight with your own eyes. And listen: beyond the hill there is a wide river. That is a much better place for big folk like you.”
হাতিরা গুনগুন করে আলোচনা শুরু করল। “বুড়ো খরগোশ আজগুবি গল্প বলছে না তো?” সর্দার হাতি বলল, “পরীক্ষা করেই দেখি।” চুপিচুপি পুকুরপাড়ে এসে সর্দার পানিতে উঁকি দিল। ওমা! সত্যিই তো, পানির ভেতর জ্বলজ্বল করছে গোল চাঁদ! সে যেই শুঁড়টা পানিতে ডোবাল, অমনি ছলাৎ করে ঢেউ উঠল। চাঁদ কেঁপে কেঁপে আঁকাবাঁকা হয়ে ভেঙে গেল টুকরো টুকরো হয়ে।
The elephants rumbled among themselves. “Is that old rabbit telling tall tales?” The leader said, “Let’s find out.” He crept to the edge of the pond and peered in. Goodness! There, shining in the water, was the round moon! But as soon as he dipped his trunk in, splash went the ripples, and the moon wobbled, twisted and broke into shivering pieces.
“ও বাবা! চাঁদমামা রাগে থরথর করে কাঁপছেন!” সর্দার তাড়াতাড়ি পিছিয়ে এসে বলল, “মাফ করো চাঁদমামা, আমরা এক্ষুনি চলে যাচ্ছি।” সে রাতেই হাতির পাল পাহাড় পেরিয়ে চলে গেল সেই বড় নদীর ধারে। সেখানে পানি অনেক, জায়গাও অনেক। হাতিরাও মনের সুখে থাকতে লাগল।
“Oh my! Uncle Moon is shaking with anger!” The leader backed away quickly. “Sorry, Uncle Moon, we are leaving right now.” That very night the herd crossed the hill to the wide river. There was plenty of water and plenty of room, and the elephants were happy there too.
সকালে খরগোশেরা দেখল, পুকুর শান্ত, পানি আবার টলটলে। খুশিতে তারা লাফিয়ে-নেচে লম্বুকান দাদুকে ঘিরে ধরল। দাদু হেসে বললেন, “চাঁদমামা তো আকাশেই থাকেন রে বোকারা! পানিতে ছিল শুধু তাঁর ছায়া।” সেদিন ছোট্ট খরগোশেরা শিখল, ছোট হলেও ভয় পেতে নেই; মাথা ঠান্ডা রেখে বুদ্ধি খাটালে বড় বিপদও পার হওয়া যায়।
In the morning the rabbits found the pond calm and clear once more. They leapt and danced around Grandpa Longears. He chuckled, “Silly ones, Uncle Moon lives up in the sky! In the water there was only his reflection.” That day the little rabbits learned that being small is no reason to be afraid. Keep a cool head and use your wits, and even a big problem can be solved.
