Under the ground, in a little anthill, lived Chhoton the ant with his Abbu, his Ammu and a crowd of brothers and sisters. All day long they marched in a line carrying grains of sugar and crumbs of rice, and in the evening they played hide-and-seek in the tunnels. But Chhoton’s heart was always up in the sky. “Oh, if only I could fly like a bird!”

Ammu would stroke his head and say, “The world outside isn’t so easy, my dear. The sky is full of dangers. And if an ant goes near a bright light at night, its wings get burnt.” Still Chhoton could not stop dreaming. His earthen home and its earthy colour all seemed so dull to him.

One day he heard the old ants talking about a wonderful well. Anyone who drank its magic water would grow wings! But the ants who had drunk it and flown away had never come home again. So the mouth of the well had been sealed up with soil.

From that day on, Chhoton crept out every night and dug at the mouth of the well. Scritch-scratch, scritch-scratch. The moon above seemed to call to him. After many nights of hard work, the magic water sparkled at last. The moment he took a sip, his back began to tickle! He looked round and saw two clear, shimmering wings on either side of him!

Whirr! Up he flew, higher and higher. Below him he left his little home, his sleeping brothers and sisters, his Abbu and Ammu. Far away, the lights of a village twinkled, and Chhoton flew towards them as if the light were pulling him.

He slipped through the window of a house with a tin roof. The power was out, and a candle was burning on the table. Around it sat a brother and sister, Nusrat and Rafi, teasing each other. Then their Ammu came in. “Say Bismillah and eat up,” she said, and began feeding each of them by hand. Chhoton’s heart ached. That was exactly how his own Ammu fed him!

“I’ll just take one close look at the light, and then I’ll fly home,” he thought, and flew towards the candle. But as soon as he came near the flame, the hot air curled up his thin wings. Plop! He dropped onto the edge of the table, his little heart thumping with fright.

Nusrat spotted him. “Oh, poor little ant! He’s one of Allah’s creatures, Rafi, don’t hurt him.” She gently lifted him onto a jackfruit leaf and set him down on the earth of the courtyard. His wings were gone, but his six legs worked perfectly well! He walked all night long, and before dawn broke, Chhoton was back at his own anthill.

Ammu hugged him and burst into tears. Chhoton whispered, “Ammu, I’ll never go away again. This is where the most happiness is.” That day Chhoton understood that you don’t have to run far away to find happiness. It hides in the love of your own family, and safety lies in listening to the warnings of those who love you.
